Ryan Reynolds' Green Lantern costume: could be better

The cover of the new Entertainment Weekly has just been released revealing our first glimpse at Ryan Reynolds in his all CG Green Lantern costume. O.K. I'm kinda on the fence about the look of this thing. Will probably have to see it in action first before really knowing if it works. Some elements are too much of a departure from the comic rendition, others are too literal for film.

The body looks like one of those scale human models in science class where the skin is peeled away to reveal the muscles underneath. The white in the lantern logo on his chest, even though it looks like that in the comics, seems a bit much here. I always wondered how they were going to do the mask, or if they were even going to include it at all because there was no way to not make it look weird on film. This is another aspect, the design, I'm very iffy about. Thoughts?

It is a bit "Tron-esque". A little too modernized, flashy, everything glows for me. I'm a classic Hal Jordan fan and was hoping to see that costume. This is more of a Hal Jordan, by way of Kyle Rayner meets Tron meets the "Visible Man" (from science class!).

I think they need the mask (but that's me wanting classic Lantern).

Here's a case of the producers needing to consult the current writer and artist of Green Lantern (over at DC Comics) and getting some expert advise.

Yes, I pretty much agree with all of this. Too glowy. Does have a "Tron" sensibility to it that doesn't really belong on this character. A nice Spider-Man movie modernized look would have been great!

Yes, they do need to mask to complete the classic look. Just think they shoulda tried a few more versions before finalization.

Some aspects of the current GL costume (in the comics) I'm not that keen on, but yes it would have been nice if they consulted a bit more with what's working there these days as well.

Now I'm just waiting for the first trailer to see this outfit move and fly and do everything we want to see Hal Jordan doing!

Right. The acid test is seeing it on screen, in action.
